People like lists. When I was a kid, I spent hours with The Book of Lists; decades later, “listicles” populate some of the most popular click-bait sites on the Internet.
These days, I’m fascinated by The Number Ones, a series by music critic Tom Breihan, chronicling each number #1 pop hit since 1958. It’s a truly awesome way to get familiar with pop music history.
I love theater but I don’t know as much as I probably should about theater history. I’m too old to take a class and I don’t know who even gives one that would do the trick. So, this site is my attempt to educate myself and maybe provide a little entertainment to others who might be interested.
My quest is to profile all of the productions that have had at least 1,000 performances on a Broadway stage, 122 as of March 2023. It will be a dynamic list: when the pandemic closed down Broadway in 2020, “Hamilton” was in 39th place. It has since risen to #25. As I proceed through this list, there will be some unexpected pleasures (the lovely “Once” at #94) and some inexplicable surprises (“Mummenshanz” at #75).
I hope you’ll find the bits of theater trivia and effluvium interesting. If there are aspects of my profiles you particularly enjoy or additional items you’d like to see, please let me know via my antiquated email address.
Now, on with the show…
